Visit the town and discover Tossa de Mar
Tossa is a true open-air museum Its prehistoric remains give way to a modern town, first a haven for artists and intellectuals, and later a generous host to tourists and visitors. You can’t miss its impressive city walls, the “Vila Vella” or the old quarter where, almost without looking for it, you will find reminiscences of some of its most illustrious inhabitants and visitors, such as the painter Marc Chagall or the actress Ava Gardner, who was even able to persuade Frank Sinatra to visit.
Will you also be one of them and fall in love with the place, also being won over by Tossa? I’m sure you will be. And you won’t be the only one, because you’ll see that there are many a reason to.
A stroll around Tossa de Mar
As far as we know, Tossa has been inhabited since Palaeolithic times. But we do not know of its real activity until the time of the Roman Empire, when they chose this natural bay on the Costa Brava to locate their Turissa. It must have been a key natural port for the technical stopovers of their fleets, either before or after crossing the Gulf of León and its Tramuntana storms. The remains of its Roman Villa, at the entrance to the village, confirm this.
The walls that we find today presiding over Tossa are the result of the defences that the town had to construct against the pirate attacks it endured between the 10th and 12th centuries. It is a unique landmark in the Mediterranean because of the construction itself and its excellent condition.
Leisure in Tossa de Mar
Other leisure activities that Tossa has to offer are due to the fact that Tossa de Mar, before the arrival of tourism, was a small fishing village, and now it is still a small town with very unique characteristics. Most of the inhabitants survived on fishing and small-scale farming.
Gastronomy
Today, tourists visiting Tossa can enjoy these origins, as one of the most popular products is its cuisine with sea and mountain products. Not forgetting the typical local dish, the famous “Cim i Tomba”, a seafood stew made with potatoes, aioli, and uses the fish that could not be sold and was cooked by turning it over.
The night
Evenings in Tossa are rather quiet. New cocktail bars and small local clubs are opening up, but the liveliest areas are undoubtedly the terraces on the seafront promenade or the beach bars. In summer, both in the church and on the terrace of the lighthouse, there are highly recommended concerts.
Markets
It is also interesting to note the weekly market on Thursdays, where local farmers come to offer their freshly harvested produce and where their stalls alternate with others selling textiles, household products, plants, artisan charcuterie and even churros.
Lloret de Mar
For those wanting a bigger party, you’ll find it in the neighbouring town of Lloret de Mar. An endless number of clubs and young people in search of fun that are the antithesis of the peace and quiet of Tossa. When getting around, you will need to take into account the winding road.
Catalonia
Even though you feel like you are cut off from the world thanks to the peace and quiet, you can take a day or half-day trip from the campsite and discover the region thanks to the good transport links, either by car or public transport.
