Barcelona
Barcelona, the country’s great capital, is not so far away.
Forget the traffic and the car. The local bus takes you directly to the centre of Barcelona in just 1 hour and 20 minutes. Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera, the famous Ramblas, the Barça and Picasso museums and all that a great capital city has to offer await you there.
If you are not in a hurry and you can fit it all in, another option would be by train. You will have to take it in Blanes, and although the route along the coast is very enjoyable, the service can be poor.
Girona
Girona, one hour inland, is the second most important city in the region. Its cathedral, the river Onyar with its bridges (one of them, the Devil’s Bridge, built by Gustave Eiffel, the same man who built the tower in Paris) with its colourful houses along the banks of the river Onyar, the Jewish Quarter and the Arab Baths are some of its must-see sights.
Girona is a haven for foodies, and although the renowned Michelin award-winning restaurant El Celler de Can Roca is not within everyone’s reach, the city is full of places where your palate will be more than satisfied.
Palamós
Palamós, Costa Brava’s excellent fishing port, is well worth a getaway where you can enjoy its gastronomy. It is the home of the Palamós red prawn, an excellent delicacy that can be eaten almost as soon as it has been caught. Its Fishing Museum and a stroll through the old quarter are two more options to consider, or you can walk a couple of kilometres north to discover the emblematic coves of La Fosca and S’Alguer.
Dalí y Cadaqués
The Dalí Museum in Figueres and the town of Cadaqués are exclusively for art lovers. At just over an hour from Tossa, Figueres is where the charismatic Salvador Dalí was born. Here you can visit an exceptional museum, which is as groundbreaking as the work of the painter himself.
And if you are already in the area, another hour’s journey is well worth it to visit the picturesque village of Cadaqués and the cove of Port Lligat, where the painter had his summer home.
